His Consolation

Psalm 94:19 – “When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.”

Today, when people are bogged down with worries and troubles, they are referred to a psychiatrist who will then listen to their problems and possibly subscribe them a pill to help ease their heavy hearts.  They subscribe pills for depression, anxiety, and all sorts of emotional problems now, thinking that a simple pill will take away all the pain and worry.  Unfortunately, for the patient, the problems just return again after a week or a month or a year.  The problems keep piling on, the worries build up more and more, until eventually, they are so tired of it all that they consider taking their own life.

It’s good that most people though do not deal with worry and difficulties in that same way.  Instead, they try to work on breathing exercises or talk/scream it out or focus on something else.  Each person finds their own way to deal with worry, but in most cases, they never really find true comfort just denial and a delayed date to face the difficulty.  For Christians though, we have a source of comfort beyond all mortal comprehension.  The Psalmist in Psalm 94 pleads with the Lord to pour judgment on the wicked, for the wicked were becoming arrogant thinking that God could never hurt them.  The wicked just continued to grow and persecute the righteous Psalmist, and he was quickly becoming discouraged.  But instead of falling down in despair, the Psalmist sought the Lord and found consolation there.  In our passage specifically, we find that the Psalmist was loaded with cares/worries, yet when he turned to the Lord he found a comfort that would cheer his soul.  It did not make him forget the worries.  It did not cause him to deny the worries.  He knew that they were still there.  He knew that injustice was still occurring, yet he found comfort for he remembered who was in control in the end and that God would eventually bring justice (vs. 22) – “He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out.”

We as Christians and disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ will also experience worries and difficulties.  They will arise around us and can easily grow as thorns and weeds that will choke out the growth that we can have for His Kingdom.  But instead of allowing those weeds to take root, we like the Psalmist must turn to our Lord for comfort and help, for He has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).  We are told throughout Scripture not to worry but to rely on our God for He is a caring Father who will provide for all our needs.  He provided manna for His people in the desert.  He provided deliverance for some of His prophets in the Old Testament.  And He even provided a chance for reconciliation to His enemies – us – by sending His own Son to die for our sins.  Do we need to worry?  No not at all.   Instead, let us find strength to help us in time of need in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for though the cares of your heart be many, His consolations will cheer your soul.
